AUSTIN, Texas — A man is suing Round Rock-based tech giant Dell Inc. after the company's database was hacked.
The plaintiff, a man named John Lattimore, is suing individually and on behalf of everyone impacted, claiming negligence after a cyberattack breached the company's database.
Late Thursday night and Friday morning, Dell customers received an email from the company where Dell revealed that its database had been breached. According to the email, names, physical addresses and hardware and order information – such as service tags, item descriptions, date of order and warranty information – were exposed in the breach.
According to Daily Dark Web, a website that monitors dark web activity, the information of around 49 million people from the leak appeared for sale on a dark web forum on April 29. The alleged data encompasses information on systems purchased from the company between 2017 and 2024.
The language of the lawsuit accuses Dell of "negligence" and says the plaintiff and other class action members "now suffer from a present and continuing risk of fraud and identity theft and must now constantly monitor their financial accounts."
Dell has not yet responded to the filing.
